    Personally, I strongly advise against shooting RAW. It can be a significant drain on time and mental energy, often leading to unnecessary editing obsession and potential mental health concerns. Professionalism in photography is about both approach and results. It's about harnessing light effectively, not just relying on megapixels or formats. Making mistakes with the intent to fix them later is not professional. Most of the edits you do with RAW can be set up in-camera. Create various profiles, adjust settings like saturation, contrast, sharpness, and warmth to get consistent results you want straight from the camera and avoid losing time later. Overexposed skies and completely failed white balance are your mistakes, not a reason to shoot in RAW. Get your exposure right, use exposure compensation if needed, and take advantage of built-in modes like ADL on Nikon (the "High" setting squeezes at least one more stop of highlights into the JPEG). On older cameras, decrease the contrast setting to store more highlights in challenging conditions, since contrast in camera is applied using RAW data before storing as JPEG. Not to mention multi-shot HDR modes. It's also good to use real gradient lens filters to balance exposure naturally and avoid relying too heavily on editing skies. It's not always important to preserve every single highlight in your images. Sometimes, a few blown highlights can add a natural, artistic touch to a photograph, conveying a sense of brightness and contrast that enhances the overall composition. Over-focusing on retaining every highlight can lead to flat, unnatural images that lack the dynamic range and emotional impact viewers appreciate. Instead, prioritize capturing the essence and mood of the scene. As a creator, you have the power to redefine what is considered a mistake versus your own creativity and unique perspective. Important: you have LCD previews and histograms, you have metering data, you have clipping indicators, so why make mistakes? It's not a film anymore! And cameras are not that bad at metering nowadays. For small unavoidable mistakes JPEGs allow for moderate edits like shadow lifting and color correction. While severe editing rarely works well regardless of the format. Save time by refining your photography skills and spending more time shooting, not editing. While RAW files store more information, the need for significant adjustments indicates poor shooting and poor knowledge of your camera's abilities. Ignoring exposure or white balance setting with the thought "I'm shooting RAW, I don't care" isn't professional at all! Focus on getting the shot right in-camera. Consistent, well-exposed images with minimal need for post-processing show true professionalism. Save your precious time by honing your skills and capturing great photos from the start. Save RAW for the pixel-peepers. Pixel-peeping is a largely meaningless activity since almost no one can tell the difference between RAW and JPEG in a downscaled or printed image. Yes, RAW captures more detail, but you can control such aspects directly in-camera. Think in reverse: if you're photographing a subject with fine, low-contrast texture with intent to do cropping and emphasize that fine texture later, increase the sharpness in-camera before shooting. The JPEG will then store more details than usually. Still choosing a different lens or adjusting your distance to the subject and adjusting lighting of the subject might yield a better image, emphasizing real photography workflow over excessive reliance on editing and RAW data preservation. (I mean, if you don't know how to use light to enhance fine textures and your only solution is to rely on "texture", "clarity", or "sharpness" sliders, you're not doing a professional job. Simply switching the file format to 'RAW' doesn't make you a pro or improve image quality, even if you spend ten hours editing that image.) Ultimately, viewers value composition, lighting, and the overall impact of an image, not the format or how much highlight or fine sharpness you've preserved.

      Good points, though I started out shooting slide film (Kodachrome 64) so you had very little latitude with your exposures. I liked the look and didn't mind that I had to be right on my exposure. ISO 64 also would seldom allow for super fast shutter speeds so you had to wait for the decisive moment. I also spent quite a few years shooting 4 x 5 film. So a travel event might include me capturing only 10 shots for the week! However, whenever I can get more, I'll take it. RAW gives you more than jpeg ever will and it will also help someone who hasn't yet learned to get the exposure right.

    • @tv510
      @tv510 2 дня назад

      That is peculiar. If you shoot all the images from the same camera, at the same time, they should all be the same size. I would try a test and be diligent about the details. Work with only 3-4 images to start. I don't see any reason they should be different. I Always work with image exported as .tiff from Lightroom Classic, into Helicon. Then out of helicon back into Lightroom. Once in Lightroom I can crop and such on that completed image.

    • @tv510
      @tv510 3 дня назад

      Generally when you take an image out of LRC and into PS via the "Edit in Photoshop 2024" after you work on it and save it. It goes back to Lightroom Classic. Occasionally, you might do a "Save as" then note where you are saving it and just go back to that folder and import it. If you have don't import suspected duplicates checked on import, then it should be only file that shows in the import as the others (one's you have already imported) are grayed out. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for your review, Terry. I had been waiting for Nikon's 135mm Z mount lens for a long time. So long, in fact, that I picked up a used 200mm f/2 VR - more on that later. I haven't picked up the PLENA yet, because I haven't had situations come up where I needed to be a bit closer or have a lens just a touch faster. I know if they added VR to the lens, it would have been even more expensive, but it would have been a nice touch for hand holding. Now I'm not a professional photographer (and my business card says so) - and I heard for a long time other photographers say, "you buy the 200mm f/2 to shoot it at f/2, so I never shoot it at anything else". Well, it took me a few months to realize the nonsense or bias built into that statement. So I began to toy with closing down the aperture for environmental portraits - and you know what I learned - even at f/7.1, the bokeh of the background was so smooth, that my 70-200mm f/2.8 couldn't compare. The 180mm f/2.8 really didn't compare. My question to you is, how does the PLENA render stopped down, and do you ever feel you need or want VR? Any other aspects (positive or negative) you can share? Focus speed? If you've ever shot the 200mm f/2, how would you say they compare (differences or similarities). Blowing out backgrounds smoothly is the forte of the 200 (and looks like the 135mm). I personally find, that while I love the look now and then, it ages on me. Not being able to identify anything in the background (the fast lens trap) seems more a function of the equipment (yes, I know distance to subject and from subject to background is important), but I find for me, now at this point, shooting stopped down and making everything in the frame have relevance a bit more challenging (compositionally). Happy with the color rendition? I can't tell you how happy you made me when you spoke about "what kind of portrait" (i.e. 3/4 or full length) this is good for. Long story behind that, but I've often said the same for the 200mm f/2. Thank you for kindly taking your time to make this video, and for providing your examples (i.e. DOF) and example shots.

    • @tv510
      @tv510 4 дня назад

      Thanks for checking that out. I in fact was a long time owner of the 200 F/2 and loved it. The drawback was weight and size. I sold it back when I was moving to mirrorless and was pining for that feeling again. The Plena gives me that same feeling. Now I use mine mostly at f/1.8 so I don't have many shots stopped down, but there are times I do need to stop it down. (Portraits that I know are going to stripped out of their background for instance) That soft transition from the ear to the back of the head is a nightmare to strip out perfectly. Honestly, the color, the bokeh, the sharpness - no doubt my favorite portrait lens. Even when I owned the 200 - I had wished I had the proximity of the 135 - I thought that would be perfect to me. Fast forward several years, and for me I was dead on correct. I love this lens. As far as VR? I use the Z9 - it does a great job and I have not wished for anything more. The focus is lighting fast and over all, much, MUCH lighter than the 200 ever was. I hope that info helps. Thanks again for watching.

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam 4 дня назад

      @@tv510 You're very welcome and that is just the type of information I was looking for. Much appreciated. There is NO DOUBT that the reduction in weight (and closer proximity to subject) for portraits would be a welcome change. On my 70-200mm I found myself shooting mostly at 135 - so I must have that feeling you did. Even if Nikon made a 200mm S Z mount lens (which I do not see happening) I don't think they could shave enough weight off it (although Sony did with the 300mm f/2.8) or add enough of a built in TC to make it worth the price. I'll go to my local store and test out the 135 S/Z now that you've provided this perspective. Thank you. Happy 4th.

      @@tv510 Adding to the algorithm one more time. Forgot to ask you about a specific aspect of the 135mm PLENA vs the 200mm f2. !Question: Does the 135mm PLENA demonstrate the same dimensionality that the 200mm does? Very few lenses in my limited experience have this particular characteristic, and as I began to sort out what it was about the 200mm that I loved (aside from color rendition, qualities of the bokeh, AF speed) - (I use it with a zoom for indoor sports and outdoor portraits) - I realized there was a 3D dimensionality to the images when photographed at the right angle that made the subject "Pop" even more and gave the image more depth. Just curious, before I go play with the PLENA after the 4th, if the 135 during your use has that quality. I don't think the store will let me take the lens home for a week. ;-)

    I have been dreading and avoiding learning Photoshop because of how daunting it is. I have tried several other videos attempting to get familiar with the program with no success. You are explaining every step so clearly, that I am finally understanding the program and how to use it! I do have one question. If I missed this in the first video, I apologize. When you are in Lightroom and go to the edit in photoshop and that box pops up to ask if you want to edit the original or with Lightroom edits, which one should you be using? In another video I was watching, it said the best way to edit is to use the original photo without any Lightroom edits. If I edit an original photo with no edits in Photoshop then bring it back into Lightroom, because of the type of file it becomes, I will not have all the tools available to edit the photo in Lightroom. (ex. jpeg file vs raw file) What is the correct process for that?

    Thank you for a very informative video. I am still a bit puzzled about how many shots to set and how the camera determines where to end the process. For example, if I have a flower that is about 3 inches deep from the closest point to the end of what I want in focus, how do I determine how many shots are needed. Likewise, if I am focus stacking a landscape that may be hundreds of yards deep, how can I tell the camera how many shots to take and what is the distance interval between shots. Thank you in advance for your reply.

    • @tv510
      @tv510 7 дней назад

      Hi Gary, When photographing landscapes, the camera will stop when it gets to infinity. So no issue there, set it and it will stop. When working with close-up, I set mine for the max amount of shots (200?) , I always start well be for what I want in focus and then I watch the monitor to see the progression, when it starts focusing on things way in the background (that I don't need) and has covered everything I want in focus, I just turn the camera off - that stops the focus stack. Those are my solutions, hope they work for you.

For landscapes, I would set the width to "10" with the maximum number of shots. Do I have that right? To move from the front focus point to infinity (camera set on f/5.6 - Sharpest set up for your lens) it will take about 7 shots. I keep everything on maximums and that way I don't have make any changes if I am shooting an insect or a waterfall. Go outside and give it a try. It should work fine and stop when you are done.

    Great tutorial, Terry! You explain things very well. You are also an outstanding wildlife photographer! I'm new to your website, I've only watched your Sharpen tutorial and this one so far. I have a few questions: If you make a virtual copy, which one is best to use? the original or the copy? I have a candid family portrait that I am working on, shot in quick sequence, and the best image is out of focus. I first used AI Remove to get rid of distracting background. Then I darkened and blurred it. When I went to use Denoise some of the distracting background returned with weird images. I started over, left out the denoise, and used masks to sharpen the subjects. It was better, but not acceptable. I went to Lens Blur and used the brush in the Focus mode to sharpen the subjects. It looks pretty good. My family will probably think so. It's not acceptable from a professional point of view. My camera and lens did not focus fast enough. I will try changing the focus settings. Thank you for making such great tutorials!

    • @tv510
      @tv510 13 дней назад

      Yes, when something happens fast, sometimes it hard to catch the focus, practice will pay off though. As far as a virtual copy - they are identical. I use a virtual copy to try different edits. It will work the same as an original.

    Hi Terry, nice video. I have Nikon F mount 85 mm f 1.4, 70-200 f2.8 S lens and I shoot with Z7. I shoot portraits and streets. Do you suggest I me Plena?

    • @tv510
      @tv510 13 дней назад

      With street photography, sometimes people want to shoot unnoticed by shooting at your waist or not looking through the viewfinder. If that was the case, the Plena would not be a great choice since it has such a shallow Depth of field. However, for normal composition, the Plena is amazing for softening the background. I use mine all the time, mostly for portraits. I think it makes everything better.

    Just received my copy today and went out in the backyard and shot some birds. Then came inside and shot some pictures of my dogs of course all at one 1.8. The lens has a magical quality and the output images are absolutely beautiful. I think this has become my new favorite lens. I thought I would be disappointed or discouraged by the 135 mm but to be frank yes I need to get a little further away but not that much and the end results justify the small additional distance. Highly recommend this lens

    I have realized that if I want to remove something from the edge of the photo I have to do it before cropping or I have to uncrop it to the original state before removing. Because the AI remove still works with the cropped parts of the image that is not visible. And I also have to mask every shadow that AI could think is tied with the subject that we want to remove. In the photo with the woman in front of the white wall you have left two very small shadows 🙂

      HI Gordon, on this process, I would sharpen the details that are important. I start at the eyes and work my way out for the final sharpening work, but the overall sharpening is done already in the first steps. In most cases, I wouldn't do more sharpening on the rest of the body.
